Here’s the TL;DR: macOS 13.3 has big problems. If you haven’t upgraded, don’t. If you have upgraded to 13.3, immediately upgrade to 13.3.1. It may not fix your problems but it won’t be worse.
UPDATE: There are initial reports that the 13.3.1 update may not fix FCP’s plug-in verification problem.

I’m also seeing strange behavior with Apple Mail, where it crashes after sending an email.
Another problem with 13.3, which hits closer to home, is that, after upgrading to 13.3, FCP hangs during launch as it attempts to verify audio units. When this happened to me last week, I solved the problem by deleting all the Accusonus and ERA audio plug-ins from the System and Library folders.
But, the issue is bigger than Accusonus. For example, Andrew sent me this email yesterday:

I’m running the Izotope “Everything Bundle,” which is up to date and all AU components validate without issue in Logic Pro (v10.7.7). Otherwise I don’t have any legacy or 3rd party AU components, which admittedly could be a source of trouble.
Furthermore, had no problems at all under the previous OS 13.2.1
So… something is clearly broken in the FCP / OS 13.3 combination.
Hopefully enough FCP users make enough noise for Apple to fix it. At a bare minimum they should issue a quick patch where incompatible AUs are quickly flagged instead of hanging indefinitely during startup =/

After I wrote this article Apple released the 13.3.1 update. However, I do not have any confirmation that this update fixes the audio unit problem. I contacted Apple for clarification, but so far, they haven’t responded.
Yesterday, I decided to update to 13.3.1 because staying with 13.3 was too big a risk. For now, be cautious upgrading. Let me know your results in the comments.

Newer Comments →A few of weeks ago I finished a large FCP project and as I had no other deadlines up ahead, I decided last week was a good time to upgrade to Ventura because it is well past its .1 release and the software I use all seems to be updated accordingly.
Big mistake! I have well over 400 AU plugins that FCP wants to validate. MacOS 13.3.1 doesn’t fix the problem. There is no way I will go through the plugins one by one. Life is too short. A little video I made yesterday I therefore had to edit in iMovie.

FCP verifies plug-ins to make sure one of them is not containing malware. It only does this once, or after you trash preferences. So this is, in itself, not a bad thing.
However, if it hangs – THAT’s a bad thing. See if FCP will verify all your plug-ins by leaving it open and in the background for a while. If so, great. If not, let Apple know.

If you can also put a bug in Apple’s ear about File Sharing and how it doesn’t work reliably on Ventura (M1 or Intel, it doesn’t matter in my testing), that would be amazing. We simply can’t share files directly within our office network. Ventura OS is terribly buggy in general, and now we have the wonderful 13.3 update (which I haven’t done yet, btw.) But thanks for warning us off of it!

Saw this just yesterday in a post on one of many FCP groups on FB. I indeed do have 13.3.1, and have not seen any issues when validating plug-ins and/or effects. Sheer luck, I guess? I’m on an iMac 27″ 5K 2017.

Congratulations on NOT having problems! My system is working as well.
However, we still don’t have confirmation from Apple that the 13.3.1 update actually fixes the audio plug-in problem. For now, we need to be careful.

Yes, it’s horrible – I have 1427 plug-ins and I kept [deleting] company after company trying to get Final Cut Pro to launch I gave up. It’s a very sad state of affairs that this bug made it past and that Apple is being silent and doing nothing about it, very disappointed in this pro level app. I am an audio person and everything works in Logic.

The part of your comment that bothers me the most is: “everything works in Logic.” There’s no reason for this bug to exist and ESPECIALLY no reason for Apple to remain silent about it. I will continue to badger them.

FCp X has been broken since 13.3 and I’ve basically gone back to Windows. My new MBP probably has been used an hour since 13.3 launched, for iMessage.
I think I’m going to sell it and stick with Windows moving forwards. Bad purchase decision 🙁
