Getting Ready for the 2013 NAB SHOW

Posted on by Larry

PART 1 of 3 – PLANNING

For the sixth year in a row, our podcast – DigitalProductionBuzz.com – is the official podcast of the NAB Show. During the event, which starts Monday, April 8, we will be broadcasting live shows, recording special reports and posting video analysis, all focused on helping you keep up with the latest technology announcements.

NOTE: To see all our NAB Coverage, visit www.NABShowBuzz.com. Or, visit the main Buzz page at: www.digitalproductionbuzz.com.

This is the first of three blogs on how we are covering the show. In this post, I’ll explain what we are planning to do.

In Part 2, which I’ll publish just before NAB starts, I’ll showcase the more than $30,000 in gear and software we are using to make the magic happen. Then, in Part 3, I’ll write about what we learned and how it turned out. I’ll post that the weekend after NAB ends.

NOTE: If you want to stop by and check out our operation, we will be in Booth SL11505, in the South Lower Hall, about two-thirds the way toward the back, in a 20×20 booth.

WHAT WE ARE DOING

During the show, we will interview more than 70 industry leaders from companies both large and small. These interviews will be packaged into three categories:

The producer of our NAB special coverage is Debbie Price.

Our NAB coverage is sponsored by Blackmagic Design (Premier Sponsor), Telestream (Video sponsor), Pond5 and Marriott Hotels (Show Sponsors). We are VERY grateful for their support; they makes everything we do at NAB possible.

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENTS

Helping us is our team of special correspondents who are providing their perspective on all the new announcements:

“Wait a minute!,” I hear you say, “A comedian????” Yup. Owen is both a stand-up comedian and a featured guest on “Everyone Hates Chris.” He’s also a geek who’s never attended NAB.

I thought it would be cool to turn a comic loose on NAB and watch his reactions. Cool – or catastrophic – I’m looking forward to watching the results.

Our special correspondents are each covering different themes within NAB:

Our special correspondents will be featured in both video segments and our evening Special Reports.

LIVE UPDATES FROM THE 2013 NAB SHOW

Our Live Show Updates start Monday, April 8, at 2:00 PM. Each show features four companies, selected based on their influence in the industry. Each of these companies is, most likely, announcing new products at the show. (And, no, I don’t know what most of them are announcing. Should be cool stuff, though.)

We want to find out what these new products are, why they were deveoped, who they are designed for, and what they cost.

Live Show Times

You’ll find the complete schedule posted here: www.NABShowBuzz.com. We will be updating this site constantly over the next two weeks. You can access the live stream from here or download the shows from iTunes or the Buzz website afterward.)

THE LATEST BUZZ

What we wanted to do was stream live video from the show floor. What we discovered is that Internet access is reasonably priced everywhere EXCEPT at a trade show. To access the Internet from the trade show floor, would have cost $6,000 for a three-day 3 mbps Internet connection! That is a mind-numbingly outrageous price, and, much though I wanted to create live video shows, the Internet access charges were ridiculous.

So, we are taking a camera crew and recording a variety of video reports from our analysts, Owen Smith, and myself. We will post these both to our YouTube channel – www.youtube.com/larryjordanfcp – and www.digitalproductionbuzz.com. Production starts on Sunday, with postings released first thing Monday morning (April 8).

These video segments are an experiment, and I’m very curious to get your feedback.

EVENING SPECIAL REPORTS

In between the live shows and video reports, I’m recording our trademark audio interviews with more than 40 leading companies. These interviews will be packaged into nightly special reports, as well as individual interviews posted to The Buzz website. Our guest list is still in flux as we nail down final confirmations. It is my hope to post a new show each night around 8 PM.

We will also be adding the thoughts of our commentators to each evening show, so you not only get to hear the news, you also get an understanding of what it all means.

The best place to see all our coverage is www.NABShowBuzz.com. We will be updating our NAB coverage page throughout all of NAB.

This year’s coverage is our biggest and best yet. I look forward to sharing what we learn with you. And, as always, I’m interested in your comments.

One Response to Getting Ready for the 2013 NAB SHOW

  1. Ryan says:

Looking forward to the coverage. I know it would throw a wrench in the works for this year, but maybe next time around LiveU or Livestream or someone like that can supply a live video stream solution that wouldn’t require the WAY overpriced convention center connection.
    Have fun!
