I have a thought about the limit – beyond 17K video. I think the pertinent technical factor is simply lens resolution. What is the physical dimension of the best cinema lens (or the typical prosumer lens) and what pixel count / pixel size does that actually EQUAL?
Jim:
Interesting comment. However, I suspect the limitation will be the sensor, more than the lens. We shall see.
Larry
I think optics must play a limiting role in determining the quality of ultra high resolution images. Distortion and aberration can only be magnified at higher pixel counts. The reason I would rather shoot a subject with 2 different focal ranges (say 50mm for wide and 200mm for close) than field in on the 50mm wide shot by 200% is that critical focus always suffers because the precision of the lens when over-resolved. Also, lens makers usually attempt to build the sharpest lenses they can, but they assume a given resolution/tolerance. When you blow past it with ultra high resolution capture, you are pushing the resolving limits of the lens.
I applaud BlackMagic Design for all their work they do for us little guys!
And I really wonder about URSA vs. PYXIS.
