On YouTube, Paul asks:
My question is about importing files. Is there a possibility to always import them “In Library” by default? Now I always have to make that choice in Storage Location -> Media -> In Library. In the 11.01 version “In Library” doesn’t seem to be set as default.
Larry replies: Actually, storing media in the library IS the default setting. However, over the course of time, it is easy to accidentally change this.
While you can change these settings manually, the fastest method is to simply reset your preference settings. (Apple now calls this “Deleting Custom Settings.” Same thing.)
Resetting does NOT alter any of your projects, media or edits. It does, however, reset all preference settings to their defaults and empty the “Recent Libraries” list in the File menu. It is a good idea to make a screen shot of any custom preference settings so you can change after you reset.
NOTE: While storing media in the library has advantages, if you plan to use the media in different libraries, it is much better to link to media and store it outside the Library.
RESET PREFERENCES
While FCP is restarting – and it will take a bit longer than usual because Final Cut needs to reset everything – delete the VideoAppDiagnostics file from the Desktop. This file is only needed if you are working with Apple Support to resolve a problem.
VERIFY PREFERENCE SETTING
To verify that the preferences are reset, open Final Cut Pro > Settings > Import and verify that Files > Copy to library… is enabled.
CHECK LIBRARY DEFAULTS
Once you’ve reset your custom settings, you should confirm them.
CHECK IMPORT DEFAULTS
If you find your storage location changing, it is most likely NOT a change in defaults, but a simple setting in the Media Import window.
Even though you set the default media storage location to the Library in preferences, you can alter this during any import by changing a single option.
Also, when importing media using the Media Import window (shortcut: Cmd + I), make sure that Files > Copy to library is enabled under Files in the right sidebar.
Changing this setting to Leave files in place means that anything imported for that session AND ALL SESSIONS going forward until you change it – will link to files but not store them in the library.
